Swedish Association of Senior Hospital Physicians - a short presentation

The Swedish Association of Senior Hospital Physicians (Sjukhusläkarföreningen) is a professional association and trade union of senior hospital physicians in Sweden. The main purpose of the association is to protect the professional, social and financial interests of the members and to promote their interest in matters concerning medical education and scientific activities.

The Swedish Association of Senior Hospital Physicians is one of 6 professional branches in Swedish Medical Association (SMA).  IT is the largest professional branch with 17 200 members (including 3000 pensioners). We organise clinical professors, consultants, assistant consultants and senior registrars.

The supreme decision-making body of the association is the annual representative meeting who has 70 delegates, elected by 30 local associations. The central board is responsible for the current activities of the association between the representative meetings. The central board has 10 meetings a year. The body has 9 delegates who are elected by the representative meeting.

Information of the activities of the association is given to the members by the Journal Sjukhusläkaren (www.sjukhuslakaren.se), by the homepage (www.sjukhuslakarforeningen) and by SMA´s homepage (www.slf.se). The journal is published with 6 issues a year and with an edition of 18 000 copies.

The Association has its office located in the building of Swedish Medical Association (SMA) at Villagatan 5, Stockholm. There are two people employed at the office.

By representation in all preparing and decision-making bodies in the SMA, The Swedish Association of Senior Hospital Physicians has great possibilities to act upon and to influence the policy of the SMA in various professional problems and affairs. The Swedish Medical Association represents the members in colletive bargaining about salaries, working hours, working conditions etc against the Federation of County Councils. But the SMA is also deeply involved in a wide range of other professional issues, e.g. medical education, medical ethics, health care politics, quality assurance and international relations.
